Our Materials
At KAS Kopenhagen, we maintain a continuous focus on selecting materials with care. Our ambition is to create long-lasting furniture where quality, functionality, and aesthetics go hand in hand, while also considering our environmental footprint.
We work purposefully with materials that support durability and timeless design, and we continuously explore new ways to reduce waste and optimise the use of resources. Our material choices are part of an ongoing development process where responsibility and well-considered solutions are at the core.
Below, you can learn more about the materials we use.

Cotton
Natural, Soft and Responsibly Sourced Material
We strive to use 100% organic cotton in all our textile products to ensure the highest quality for both children and the environment. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilisers, or harmful spraying agents — which is reflected in its softness, breathability, and purity.

RAFFIA
A Natural and Handwoven Material
Raffia is made from the leaf fibres of the raffia palm (Raphia farinifera), which grows in tropical regions of Africa and Asia. The fibres are harvested, dried, and carefully handwoven into a flexible and durable natural material that has been used for generations for everything from baskets and textiles to furniture.
As raffia is a 100% natural material and each product is handmade, natural variations in colour, texture, and shape will occur. Small differences in the appearance of the fibres are part of the material’s authenticity and make each product unique.
Raffia combines high strength with a soft and flexible structure, making it ideal for storage baskets in children’s rooms. It withstands daily use, can easily be moved around, and retains its shape over time.

Sustainable and Safe for Children
Raffia is a biodegradable natural material, free from plastic, synthetic fibres, and harmful chemicals. It is produced with minimal environmental impact and is at the same time a safe and allergy-friendly choice for children’s spaces.

Muscovy Down
Muscovy Down – Light, Insulating and Long-Lasting
Muscovy down is a luxurious natural material that is exceptionally lightweight while offering excellent loft, making it one of the best choices for children’s duvets. Compared to duck down, fibre filling, or kapok, muscovy down has superior insulating properties, meaning the duvet retains warmth without feeling heavy or clammy.
Long-Lasting Quality
Muscovy down maintains its loft and quality through many years of use and repeated washing. Other filling materials such as fibre, kapok, or duck down may clump together or lose volume over time. This makes muscovy down a durable and long-term investment.
Optimal Sleeping Comfort
Muscovy down naturally adapts to the body’s temperature and creates an ideal sleeping climate, ensuring that the child is neither too warm nor too cold during the night. The duvet is therefore breathable, lightweight, and exceptionally comfortable.

Purebio Foam
Sustainable Comfort with PureBio Foam
In our premium Bio mattress, we use advanced PureBio foam, representing a new generation of environmentally responsible materials.
The foam is produced through a 100% Biomass Balance process, where fossil raw materials are replaced with renewable and bio-based resources — such as organic waste from agriculture and natural sources.
A Healthy, Safe and Responsible Mattress for Your Child
The high-resilience foam adapts to the child’s body, providing optimal support and comfort, while the open-cell structure promotes air circulation and moisture regulation.
PureBio foam offers a documented CO₂ reduction of up to 74% compared to traditional PU foam and is developed with a focus on health, safety, and long-lasting durability.
Additionally, the material is engineered to retain its shape over time with a low risk of sagging, ensuring consistent comfort for years to come.
The outer fabric of the mattress is certified according to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, meaning it has been tested for harmful substances and meets strict health and safety requirements.

Pu FOam
Comfortable Support and Optimal Ventilation
In our standard mattresses, we use a lightweight and flexible polyurethane foam that provides a soft and comfortable sleeping surface combined with stable support. The foam adapts to the child’s body and retains its shape over time, ensuring a safe and comfortable night’s sleep.
The open-cell structure ensures good ventilation and helps regulate both temperature and moisture — an important feature in children’s beds, where breathability and ergonomics are essential.
Safe Materials for Healthy and Restful Sleep
All mattresses are developed with the child’s safety and well-being as the highest priority. The materials are tested according to European standards and comply with EN 16890:2017 for mattresses for children’s beds, with a focus on health, comfort, and environmental considerations.
We believe that good sleep begins with the right materials — which is why we choose foams that not only support your child but also consider the planet.

PU Lacquer
Safe and Durable Surface
Our painted furniture achieves its beautiful and durable finish with high-quality PU lacquer, developed specifically for children’s furniture. The lacquer is tested and approved in accordance with EN 71-3, the European standard for toys and children’s products. This ensures that the furniture is safe for children while providing a long-lasting and attractive surface suitable for everyday use.
Safety and Quality in One
PU lacquer offers high resistance to wear and protects the wood against everyday use. It gives the furniture an elegant and uniform finish while helping to preserve its quality and appearance for many years.
A Safe Choice for Your Home
With PU lacquer, you receive furniture created with a focus on quality, safety, and longevity. The protective surface helps maintain the furniture’s appearance year after year while contributing to a safe and healthy environment for children.
When unpacking, the lacquer may emit a mild and temporary odour. This is completely normal for newly manufactured furniture, is not harmful to health, and typically disappears after a few days of use and regular ventilation.

Wood
Natural Variations
Wood is a natural and living material that brings warmth, character, and personality to every piece of furniture. As each piece of wood is unique, natural variations in colour, texture, and grain will occur. Small differences in tone, mirrored grain patterns, knots, and markings are part of the wood’s natural expression and make each piece truly unique.
As a living material, wood may absorb stain differently across various parts of the furniture, and over time its appearance may be influenced by light, temperature, and use. These natural variations and changes are part of the material’s authenticity and contribute to the furniture’s distinctive character and timeless appeal.
Our Choice of Wood
KAS furniture is made from carefully selected wood species, primarily solid oak, with surfaces treated to highlight the natural grain structure and give the furniture a warm and rich tone.
Solid wood: Provides strength and robustness on the most heavily used surfaces.
Veneer: Creates large, beautiful surfaces where the wood grain stands out clearly.
Plywood: Used as an internal construction material and is not visible in the finished product. Plywood contributes to stability, reduces the risk of warping and cracking, and ensures that the furniture retains its shape and function for many years.
Quality and Material Selection
We use wood from responsibly managed forests in both the EU and the USA, selected with a focus on quality, consistency, and durability. All furniture is constructed with great attention to strength, stability, and design.
The combination of carefully selected wood types and well-considered construction ensures highly functional furniture with long-lasting durability — designed to last for many years.
Wood and Maintenance
Wood is a natural material that reacts to changes in temperature and humidity. This means that the wood may move slightly over time and, in some cases, adjust during the first months after the furniture is put into use. This is a natural characteristic of solid wood and not a sign of defects or reduced quality.
To ensure the furniture maintains its stability and function, we recommend regularly tightening screws and fittings — especially during the initial period of use and thereafter as needed. This is considered normal maintenance and helps ensure that the bed or furniture remains stable and safe for many years.
Maintaince
We recommend maintaining a stable indoor climate and avoiding significant fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaning agents.
